Maurizio Ponz de Leon (Messina, 1948) ha svolto la sua attività di Docente Universitario di Medicina Interna (1980 – 2018) presso l’Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia. E’ autore di libri scientifici (Familial and Hereditary Tumors, 1994; Tumori: una sfida per il XXI secolo, 1997; Colorectal Cancer, 2002) pubblicati dalla Springer-Verlag. Ha scritto libri di viaggi (In giro per i Caraibi, Il Fiorino, 2005; Nel Regno degli Incas, Aracne, 2006), biografie (Un uomo di coscienza: vita e pensiero di Bartolomé de Las Casas, Il Cerchio, 2009; Mossadeq, l’uomo in pigiama, I Libri di Emil, 2011) e racconti (L’uomo senza una gamba, Artestampa, 2016). Nel novembre 2001 ha ricevuto, a New York, il premio annuale della American-Italian Cancer Foundation “Excellence in Medicine” per i suoi studi sui Tumori del Colon-Retto
